How Does Linksys Velop Work?

  • by Nancy Jones
  • October 23, 2019

With Velop, Linksys provides a fast and wide-area Wi-Fi network throughout the home. Multiroom Wi-Fi system without routers, but with “nodes”. The system consists of easy-to-install Wi-Fi stations that actively distribute the wireless signal within the network. We will now explain how stations work and what tri-band technology is for a mesh network.

Integrated roaming

Your devices see different Velop stations as a single Wi-Fi network. With built-in roaming technology, you can walk from room to room with your streaming video without losing your Wi-Fi signal. You may be familiar with roaming through your mobile phone. This technology automatically connects your phone to the strongest signal when you travel across the country without you noticing. Like phones, Velop stations exchange information about the distribution of data traffic in your home network.

Beam formation

Stations know where your Wi-Fi devices are in the house. With this information, they can direct the Wi-Fi signal to the device. You can compare beam forming to a projector with Wi-Fi that lights up your laptop or tablet and follows it. By grouping the signal, it is stronger than if it were scattered in space.

Dynamic tri-band

Velop stations distribute network traffic via a tri-band system. Most routers have 2 Wi-Fi bands that allow them to direct and communicate wireless traffic. A fast 5 GHz Wi-Fi band and a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi band, which has great reach. Linksys Velop has an additional 5 GHz Wi-Fi band. This is not for your TV, laptop or tablet, but for stations to talk to each other about the best distribution for network devices. See it as a sort of Wi-Fi emergency stop band, which ensures you’re always connected to the strongest signal. The stations thus distribute the internet traffic between them, without you noticing it.

Pros and Cons of Linksys Velop

Pros

  • The Wi-Fi Multiroom system allows you to create 1 large Wi-Fi network with a powerful signal throughout the house.
  • With the simultaneous tri-band signal, your router configures 3 wireless networks at the same time.
  • This router is compatible with MU-MIMO technology, which ensures a more stable wireless connection.

Cons

To benefit from the maximum throughput of these routers, the devices connected to them must use the 5 GHz frequency.
